pyrolysis gas and biochar are produced from organic residues.

organic residues

Biomass is carbonized and gasified in a pyrolysis process. The materials that can be processed include all carbonaceous materials, such as residual and waste wood, pomace, sewage sludge, green waste, mill and fermentation residues.

pyrolysis gas

This produces an energy-rich pyrolysis gas composed of approx. 25 % hydrogen, 30 % carbon monoxide, 15 % methane and 25 % carbon dioxide. These ratios can vary depending on the process control and water content.

Another product is biochar, a substance whose potential applications know almost no bounds. In soils, it has been scientifically proven to lead to a sustainable build-up of humus and an increase in nutrient and water storage capacity. Furthermore, it is probably the most scalable solution currently available for the permanent removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. This removal can be traded via so-called carbon dioxide removal certificates.

renewable energy (electricity, gas, heat)

From the resulting pyrolysis gas, electricity and heat can be generated and used directly on site using standard technologies. Even at moderate energy prices, the amount of energy generated enables revenues of between €120,000 and €600,000 per year, depending on the size of the plant. Compared to the current energy mix in Germany, this results in CO2 avoidance of 500 to 6,000 tons per year.

trade with biochar

The resulting biochar can be sold directly or further refined with technologies from our partners and then sold. The market for biochar has high double-digit growth rates and is becoming increasingly important, mainly because of its outstanding properties for soil improvement, nutrient and water retention. With biochar, soils become more fertile and resilient to the effects of climate change. The operation of an autarkize plant earns between €130,000 and €500,000 annually from the trade in biochar.

trading in CO2 reduction certificates

Biochar consists of carbon that has been removed from the air as CO2 by the plant during its growth. Incorporated into the soil, it represents a permanent CO2 sink. One ton of biochar corresponds to between 2 and 3 tons of CO2 equivalent that has been permanently removed from the atmosphere. Negative CO2 certificates (e.g. carbon dioxide removal certificates) can be issued and marketed via this CO2sink. The market for CO2 sinks from biochar experiences a very high demand and even with a conservative estimate we expect market prices of 100-150 € per ton in the next years. This results in an additional revenue stream of €30,000 to €800,000 per year. Depending on the size of the plant, 150 to 1800 tons of biochar will be produced, thus removing 300 to 5,500 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.

disposal costs avoided or collected

autarkize plants can utilize a wide range of biomasses. Among them are also biomasses which today are disposed of cost-intensively e.g. on municipal level (green waste, waste wood, sewage sludge) or are resold e.g. in agriculture and food industry with very low proceeds (husks, peels, pomace, digestate, ...). Operators of autarkize plants can enter these markets and collect or save the disposal fees. Depending on the biomass, this results in a further revenue stream of between €50,000 and €250,000 per year.

compact design and maintenance-friendly construction

Due to our design, autarkize systems are 80% smaller than comparable systems. This results in a lower purchase price and greater application flexibility. In addition, the design is enormously maintenance-friendly, resulting in significantly lower downtimes and maintenance costs.
